Poison is a set of three status effects that can be gained a number of ways. All three types have a weakened effect with the Poison Resistant trait and can be removed with Panaceus.

Source Chance Value
shallow water 30% 1-4
deep water 25% 1-4
sewage 100% 1-7
toilet 60% 1-3

The most common source of poisoning is drinking raw, unboiled or treated water. The chance to get tainted water and the value of poisoning depends on the source of the water.

If there is any "poison" in water, it will grant Food Poisoning for [poison]*300 turns upon consuming. If poison value is higher that 2-4 it will give additional Poisoned status for [poison]*100 turns.

Poisoned

The character can become Poisoned for 600 turns after eating Chunk of tainted meat or tainted veggy or certain mushrooms, or for 30 turns when hurt by monster with the VENOM flag (some insects and all spiders), or by standing in a cloud of toxic gas, which will infect through mouth with strength 5 and 30 turns duration.

Poison decreases the character's dexterity and perception by 1 and strength by 2 (Poison Resistant negates the strength penalty). It also can hurt the character's torso for [0-2]*[0-1] damage and additionally increase the pain counter by 1 each turn with 0.(6)% chance (or 0.(1)% with Poison Resistant).

Poisoned can be detected by Blood Analysis and removed by Blood Filter bionics.

The venomous mutation grants this effect as bonus melee attack with 6 turns duration.

Badly Poisoned

A character can become Badly Poisoned for 40 turns when hurt by a monster with the BADVENOM flag (black widow) or by standing in a cloud of thick toxic gas, which will infect through mouth with strength 5 and 30 turns duration.

Bad poison decreases the character's speed by 10, dexterity and perception by 2, and strength by 3 (or 1 with Poison Resistant). It also can hurt the character's torso for 0-2 damage and additionally increase the pain counter by 2 each turn with 1% chance (or 0.2% with Poison Resistant).

Bad poison can also be injected by mutants with the Strongly Venomous mutation on a successful attack, for 6 turns.

Food Poisoning

A character will suffer from Food Poisoning for 1800 turns after eating Chunk of tainted meat or tainted veggy or certain mushrooms. More commonly. it is caused by rotten food or bad water. The duration for food is randomized between 60 turns and [food nutrition + 1]*60 turns. Chances and duration for water are explained above.

The effects from eating rotten food can be eased by Expanded Digestive System bionics (not a 100% chance to become poisoned, no health penalty) or almost entirely negated with the Saprovore mutation (keeps random penalty to nutrition though). Neither of these traits affect infection from bad water, tainted meat, tainted veggy, or mushrooms.

Chances
to vomit
Default Poison
Resistant
Default 480.(2)% 480.08%
Weak Stomach +0.(3)% +0.(1)%
Nausea +2% +0.1%

Food poisoning decreases the character's speed by 20, dexterity and perception by 1, and strength by 3 (by 1 with Poison Resistant). It also can hurt character's torso for 1 damage each turn with 0.(3)% chance (or 0.(1)% with Poison Resistant) and cause vomiting.

Vomiting reduces duration of effect by 300 turns, as well as almost any benefits from eating spoiled comestibles.
