Portal storm is a rare but extremely dangerous event. It causes nether monsters to temporarily spawn and changes outdoor terrain.

Challenge - Portal Dependent scenario creates a character in the middle of Portal Storm, far away from potential shelters.

When portal storm starts, the game will warn about it:

You suddenly register a buzzing in your senses. It's getting louder, and your head starts to throb. Something is coming.

Within 2 minutes the weather will change to Early Portal Storm. After portal storm gets into full force, mini-dungeon will spawn nearby, and character will get mission **Investigate Strange Location** marking its location.

Dungeon

Currently portal storm dungeon is a 15x15 box of constantly shifting walls. To beat it, character needs to go south, step into vortex and then step into portal outside. After getting outside they will receive one of rewards:

  • escape rock - an item. Upon activation, player is moved into safe extradimensional 3x3 room for 3 minutes. Useful panic button if player runs out of stamina, bleeds heavily or gets into some other dangerous situation.
  • Tainted shadow - a hidden mutation lasting 2 days. It spawns friendly Tainted Shadow, frail monster with relatively high damage, essentially a respawning manhack.
  • Either Warped viewpoint, Weakened gravity or Weakened inertia - an effect which increases player's perception, strength or dexterity by 6 for 2 days.

Currently there is no loot inside the dungeon.

Strategy

Staying inside

Character may wait out the portal storm under the roof. Most nether monsters can't break windows, and can't smell the characters. However, they can climb into windows or walk into open doors, so every entrance should be closed. It's possible to sleep through storm, however, character needs to be deafened because some nether monsters make loud noises.

Raiding

The easiest way to reach the vortex and leave without engaging spawned monsters is on 1-tile-wide vehicle, such as bicycle or motorcycle. If possible, avoid fighting, get through the maze and leave.

It might seem tempting to wait the portal storm inside crowded city. Unfortunately, this doesn't work: most monsters spawned by storm aren't particularly hostile towards zombies, and some can't even damage them.
