Bot on loose!

Hey, your bot's clogging the Recent Changes, despite bot edits supposedly being hidden! KA101 (talk) 20:40, 17 September 2013 (PDT)

Yeah, I noticed that...I thought GlyphGryph changed the setting on that account, but you're right, it doesn't seem to be working. Didn't seem worth waiting over, though. BMacZero (talk) 20:42, 17 September 2013 (PDT)
OK; I typically use the Recent Changes when I'm looking for stuff to proofread, etc. Can wait a few days whilst the bot blows over. KA101 (talk) 20:45, 17 September 2013 (PDT)

Upcoming update (0.8)

Hi BMacZero,

With the upcoming update, that includes a update to the weight system, a lot of items and templates will need to be revised. While this can be done manually I think it's an ideal task for a bot. Are you planning to run yours for all this?

--Kenoxite (talk) 01:38, 4 September 2013 (PDT)

Yeah, that's been a to-do for a while - being able to run the bot over all the items and have it update values in the boxes in accordance with the latest game files. Right now it can only create new pages. I'll plan to do this when 0.8 rolls around. Templates that need to be changed will probably need to be done manually (adding the /100 or whatever that will convert the grams to 1/10 kg), but almost all of the itembox templates boil down to Template:Infobox/Item. In fact, think Template:Ammo should actually be put back how it was at that point - the /100 that is there was because weights for ammo were (still are?) listed for a stack of 100. After the Ammo template divides by 100 to get the weight for one unit, the Infobox/Item template should take that and do the grams-kg conversion. The Row/ templates are a bit more work but doable by hand. BMacZero (talk) 08:44, 4 September 2013 (PDT)
OK then. I'll concentrate on the templates while you work on your bot. If for any reason you think you can't make it just let me know and I'll start to update manually all I can. I think there's now others that might be willing to give a hand, so this could be done relatively fast even without a bot compared to past versions (where it was mainly some random guys and me updating by hand).
About the weight and stacks issue, I'll look into that. I think I have never touched those templates previously other than to add some items, so I was unaware of the weight and stacking particularities. In any case, it might be a good idea to specify when the specified weight refers to that of a single item (assumed as default) and that of a stack. Maybe adding the number of items in the stack next to the weight (example: Weight: 0.67 (100u.)). Although that would more than likely require another field in the template (item count).

Item descriptions

Another request.

I'm planning on revising all items so the in-game description is separated from user tips and hints but, again, I think this is something that it's probably done more easily with a bot.

Right now it's pretty difficult to determine which is which, both from a reader stand point and for a contributor one (when you need to update such descriptions).

I'd like to either separate the description and hints in their own sections (such as here) or apply some kind of different format to the in-game description. Example of the latter using the quote template (in-game description top, user hints below):

Fresh, clean water. Truly the best thing to quench your thirst.

When it comes to containers for collecting water to purify and drink, different containers hold a different amount of uses for drinking. Flasks hold 1, bottles hold 2, gallon jugs hold 10 and jerrycans hold 40.

I'll see if I can come up with a good way to do this. It might be tough because in a lot of cases the game description that was on the page has been kind of morphed and adopted into the main page text. It will probably just tag it if there's an exact match, and if there isn't, I could either add a new line with the current in-game desc or do nothing. Either way will require some manual cleanup.
