Subway tunnels provide faster (and less sewage-filled) movement across the city than underground sewers, and are a relatively safe way to travel from point to point.

Key word being relatively safe. Note that they host their own share of hostile creatures, and it's easy to get lost in the huge dark tunnels. Bring extra batteries.

Addtionally, subways are a decent source of quality salvage. Scattered here and there among the paper wrappers and rocks the sharp eyed traveler can find gems like road maps, cell phones, charged flashlights, full oil lamps, and even the occasional atomic nightlight. Enter with a set of Light amp goggles and several changes of batteries, and you can leave dragging a cart-full of loot. Just watch out for all those mounds of dirt.
