A deep hole. It can be filled in to create a shallow pit using a shovel or stone shovel.

Falling into a pit causes some damage and prevents movement until the character gets out. While in a pit, the character's vision is restricted to surrounding tiles. Enemies and NPCs are subject to similar effects.

Zombies and other mindless beings will always fall into any pit they walk into and will not intentionally avoid them. Some enemies can successfully get "on" a pit without falling inside. However, intelligent beings (namely NPCs) will actively avoid visible traps, so because a gaping hole in the ground is painfully obvious, you can expect them to try taking another route, such as windows.

If you examine the pit with access to a two by four, the pit can be covered.
