There are two variants of containers, either containers in which you store items, or containers in which you store drinks. And both can be wearable clothing, or just normal objects. If you are looking for clothing items in which you can store other items (which was simplified to just increasing your max volume in pre-0.F (Frank) versions), you should look at the wearable containers page.

Unrelated to items storing other items and liquids, there is a maximum of 4096 items per floor tile, less for container type furniture and vehicle parts.

The rest of this page is written assuming drink containers, not item containers.

Container data

These items exist to store liquids of various kinds. Most liquids that spawn in buildings spawn within one of these objects, and some containers also rarely spawn by themselves (regular and 3-liter glass jars have a range of spawn rates for different areas try foraging in forests).

To calculate how much gasoline can be stored in a container, multiply its capacity by 200. Example: a plastic jerrycan can hold 40 units of liquid, so it can store 8000 gasoline units (40 * 200 = 8000).

Pockets

Containers can have a variable number of pockets, each pocket has a volume, weight and length limit, for example: a box might have a single pocket with 5,0L of volume and a max length of 10 inches, this means that you can store up to 5 items of 1L of volume as long as they are less than 10 inches in length, but you wouldn't be able to store an item that's even 0,5L in volume if it is longer than 10 inches

Transfering/Dumping Liquids

To transfer liquids from one container to another one only needs to Unload it and then select the letter of an empty or partially empty container. Keep in mind how much the containers can hold, and that you cannot mix different liquids in one container. To acquire fuel from a vehicle requires a rubber hose and an empty container. Simply activate the rubber hose, select the direction of the vehicle, and then select the letter of your container. One can also use this method to transfer fuel from one vehicle directly to another if they are parked one space apart. If you want to unload liquid into heavy containers like the 55 gallon drum, make sure they are on the same tile as you and Unload the container in your inventory into the heavier container on the ground. To dump the liquids of a container on the ground Unload the container but then hit ESC followed by the direction you would like to unload the container. Be careful however, liquids that are dumped onto the ground cannot be retrievedVerify, but liquids such as gasoline can still be set on fire, you can use a mop to clean up spills.

A quick rundown of container-only flags:
RIGID - Containers with this flag always have the same volume. Containers without it have their volume increased by their contents' volume.
WATERTIGHT - An object without this flag is not suitable for storing liquid in. However...
SEALS - Currently, this flag is also required for an item to be able to store liquid.

Due to the way 'solid' and 'liquid' comestibles are currently handled, containers which do not have WATERTIGHT and SEALS set as flags are essentially useless for the purpose of player storage - there is currently no way to move solid items into containers, and those two flags are required for an item to be able to hold liquid. However, these items are still useful for the purpose of non-comestible crafting.

Item Browser for containers: The Item Browser has a container catalog, it is updated using the recent stable and experimental game's data files, so it is more likely to be accurate.
