Certain traits can only be gained during character generation (chargen). A player interested in min-maxing for the long run might be interested in taking these traits when creating their character, since otherwise they will not be able to acquire them in-game.
These traits are those that:
- Are marked as a Targeted Mutation only. They will not be randomly-acquired via anything other than mutagen/serum from their tree.
- Are not in any tree.
- Are marked as a possible starting trait.
- Are not a prerequisite for some trait that can be acquired outside character generation. If they are, the character can mutate the prerequisite trait if the mutation code attempts to give him the dependent trait.
Some of these traits may be lost in the course of the game, if another mutation that can be acquired during the game cancels them. Such traits may be restored via purifier. Traits that cannot be lost at all are marked with "Cannot be lost" below.
Some professions have a "Profession" trait, like Police Officer. These traits are not listed below, but amount to being a special case of a trait available during chargen that cannot be lost during the course of the game.

Non-chargen-only traits that cannot be lost if taken during chargen
Some traits are available outside chargen, but can only be lost via purifier. Purifier will not remove traits taken during chargen, so if these traits are taken during chargen, they cannot be lost, and the character will have them for the remainder of the game.
These traits:
- Are marked as a possible starting trait.
- Are in a mutation tree.
- Have no trait which Cancels them which can be acquired outside of chargen. (Technically, traits can also change to other, more-powerful variants of the same trait, but for the purposes of this list, they'll be treated as not being lost.)
These traits also be interesting to a min-maxer. If taken during chargen, they can mutate their character freely, even without using sources of mutation targeted at a tree, without worrying about losing the positive traits. If a negative trait is taken, there will be no way to rid the character of it.
The various classes of fighting styles are also placed here, since in practice they provide a style that cannot be lost once acquired, and since the styles that they offer can be acquired outside chargen.

- Weak Stomach, though there is one effective exception. A character who breaks threshold in one of several trees may acquire Intestinal Fortitude, which, though Weak Stomach technically leads to Intestinal Fortitude, removes the effects of the Weak Stomach trait.
