Guide based on the 02Feb Bugfix version of Cataclysm DDA, with minor updates from 0.5.

Remember, it is not 'dying' it is 'learning how to do better next time'!

Can be found randomly on NPC's, or in the world map. One berry spawns per Marloss bush; bushes can occur near netherworld portals (not the ones that have rubble) and Fungal Blooms. There will generally be 0-2 bushes per bloom; each of the roughly 400 tiles has a 1/300 chance of being a Marloss bush. Portals will be guarded by some wandering nether monsters.

Mechanics

NOTE: The Mechanics have been changed at some point and the below is not up to date

It has no effect when eaten by NPC's.

First, the code checks whether the player also has the "Marloss Carrier" mutation. When not carrying the mutation, It has one of the following effects:

  • 33% chance. Gives one Mutation. Gives the "This berry tastes extremely strange!" text
  • 22% chance. Purifies the consumer as if the consumer consumed a purifier, removes 30 pain. Gives the "This berry makes you feel better all over." text
  • 11% chance. Purifies the consumer as if the consumer consumed a purifier, removes 30 pain, and removes radiation. Gives the "This berry makes you feel better all over." text
  • 11% chance. Fully satiates the consumer. Gives the "This berry is delicious, and very filling!" text
  • 11% chance. Makes the consumer vomit. Gives the "You take one bite, and immediately vomit!" text
  • 11% chance. Success! The consumer is now a Marloss Carrier. Gives the "You feel a strange warmth spreading throughout your body..." text

Non-carriers, no matter the result--even if you immediately vomit--enjoy the berry, for roughly +59 Morale per berry.

If the player is a Marloss Carrier, eating another berry does quite a bit:

  • gives the typical Morale bonus
  • inspires Marloss Bliss (+100 Morale)
  • fully Sates the Carrier
  • spawns netherworld Marloss plants (which will not include berries), fungus, and slime patches around the consumer. A few friendly Blobs may show up as well.

This last "marlossify" process can even break through walls. Fortunately, the effect does not harm any items that may be present. Marloss Carriers are advised to consume berries away from their base and to space them out, so as not to trap themselves in large fungal growths.

"As you eat the berry, you have a near-religious experience, feeling at one with your surroundings..."

"Ever since you ate that Marloss berry, you can't get its scent out of your nose, and you have a strong desire to try some seeds and… sap?"

Now you are something less, or more, than human. Eating Marloss berries will result in the effect described above.

Marloss Carrier is as vulnerable to Purifier as any other Mutation.
