Bartering
Your skill in bargaining, haggling, and trading with others. Higher levels increase the odds of getting the better end of a deal, and might even see you convincing others to give you free stuff.

The skills bellow which are underlined can be learned by reading books or magazines on the subject.
Computers
Your skill in accessing and manipulating computers. Higher levels can allow a user to navigate complex software systems and even bypass their security.

Dodge
Construction
Your skill at dodging whether it be from an attack, a trap, or a natural occurrence. It is also used when attempting to fall gracefully, or in other acrobatic feats. The player's chance to dodge rises slowly at the beginning, then quickly when they achieve basic competency, then slowly again as they reach the upper levels.
Your general competence in building construction. This governs the complexity of structures that can be built, and the time required to build them.

Digging pits is an easy way to raise this skill up. You just need a shovel, stone shovel or digging stick.

Cooking
Your skill in combining food ingredients to make other, tastier food items. It may also be used in certain chemical mixtures and other, more esoteric tasks.

Melee
Driving
Your skill at hand-to-hand combat, both with and without a melee weapon. At low levels this merely increases your chance to hit, but at higher levels it also increases the damage done significantly.
Your skill in operating and steering a vehicle in motion. A higher level allows greater control over vehicles at higher speeds, and reduces the penalty of shooting while driving.

Unarmed combat
Electronics
Your skill at combat without a weapon or by using martial arts. While at low levels, unarmed combat is a good way to die quickly, those skilled in it can eventually use throws and crushing blows to quickly dispatch enemies.
Your skill in dealing with electrical systems, used in the craft and repair of objects with electrical components. This skill is an important part of installing and managing bionic implants.

Bashing weapons
Apart from reading books on the subject, you can easily raise this skill by disassembling ( any electronic device you find and don't need (like flashlights).
Your skill at combat with weapons that club or bash your enemies. This includes everything, from rocks to baseball bats, and even the butt of rifles. This increases damage, and at higher levels will improve your chance to hit.

Cutting weapons
Fabrication
Your skill at combat with weapons that cut or slice your enemies. At first this will simply slightly increase accuracy and damage, later on it will help you bypass armor and thick hides.
Your skill in working with raw materials and shaping them into useful objects. This skill plays an important role in the crafting of many objects.

Piercing weapons
First Aid
Your skill at combat that involves piercing weapons. This includes spears, which only have a stabbing attack, and things like knives, which can cut or pierce. This increases your accuracy and chance of a deadly critical.
Your skill in effecting emergency medical treatment. Higher levels allow better use of medicines and items like bandages and first aid kits, and reduce the failure and complication rates of medical procedures.

Throwing
Mechanics
Your skill at throwing items and getting them to go where you want. Increases both accuracy and, at higher levels, range. Throwing costs 125 moving points.
Your skill in engineering, maintaining and repairing vehicles and other mechanical systems. This skill covers the craft of items with complex parts, and plays a role in the installation of bionic equipment.

An easy way to raise this skill is by gathering some rocks and throwing them at the evac shelter walls.
Apart from reading books on the subject, you can easily raise this skill by removing and reinstalling parts of a vehicle.

Firearms
Speaking
Your general skill when using projectile weapons. This increases your accuracy with any gun, but not as much as the skill associated with the gun in question. It also allows you to apply modifications to your guns.
Your skill in speaking to other people. Covers ability in boasting, flattery, threats, persuasion, lies, and other facets of interpersonal communication. Works best in conjunction with a high level of intelligence.

Handguns
Archery
Tailoring
Your skill with crossbows and longbows. It determines your accuracy, damage and chance of recovering the fired projectiles.
Your skill in the craft and repair of clothing, bags, blankets and other textiles. Affects knitting, sewing, stitching, weaving, and nearly anything else involving a needle and thread.

You can start training this skill either by reading a magazine or by using any bow, composite bow or crossbow you find. Those are usually found in sporting goods stores or by deactivating or triggering traps (only for the crossbow trap). Once you have at least one skill point you can easily increase this skill by crafting bolts and arrows.
A good way to increase this skill is repair up to reinforced any cloth pieces you find when looting and that you don't plan to use for yourself. Avoid practising on your own clothes at lower levels, as you might destroy them in the process.

Grenade launcher
Trapping
Your skill and accuracy with grenade and rocket launchers.

Computers
Archery
Your skill with computers, both in terms of legitimate use, and hacking. This will help you to use complex systems and bypass their security.
Your skill in using bow weapons, from hand-carved self bows to complex hunting crossbows. Quiet and effective, they require strength of body and sight to wield, and are not terribly accurate over a long distance.

Mechanics
You can start training this skill either by reading a magazine or by using any bow, composite bow or crossbow you find. == Fabrication ==
Cutting weapons
This skill defines your ability to craft some simple but useful items and working with materials of different kind (metal, plastic, wood). Often used in pair with mechanics.
Your skill in fighting with weaponry designed to cut, hack and slash an opponent. Lower levels of skill increase accuracy and damage, while higher levels will help to bypass heavy armor and thick hides.

Electronics
Dodge
Your skill with repairs to electrical systems, and the crafting of many items that use electrical parts.
Your ability to dodge an oncoming threat, be it an enemy's attack, a triggered trap, or a falling rock. This skill is also used in attempts to fall gracefully, and for other acrobatic feats.

Apart from reading books on the subject, you can easily raise this skill by disassembling ( any electronic device you find and don't need (like flashlights).
Firearms
Your overall skill in using firearms. With higher levels, this general experience increases accuracy with any gun, but is secondary to practice with the type of gun in question.

Cooking
It also allows you to apply modifications to your guns.
Your skill in combining food ingredients to make other, tastier food items. This may also be used in mixing chemicals and other more esoteric tasks.

For a more efficient butchering you'll need this skill at level 3, dexterity at 8 and strength at 4 or higher.
Throwing
Your skill in throwing objects over a distance. Skill increases accuracy, and at higher levels, the range of a throw.

Apart from reading books on the subject, you can easily raise this skill by butchering corpses (including those of zombies), crafting stone hammers and, later, digging sticks and snare triggers.
Increases both accuracy and, at higher levels, range. Throwing costs 125 moving points.

Traps
An easy way to raise this skill is by gathering some rocks and throwing them at the evac shelter walls.

Tailoring
Unarmed combat
Your skill at repairing, reinforcing and adjusting clothing, and at higher levels, creating clothing and containers from basic materials. Generally a sewing kit or bone needle is needed. This skill also applies to other methods of clothing repair and textile crafting.
Your skill in hand-to-hand fighting. For the unskilled, it's a good way to get hurt, but those with enough practice can perform special blows and techniques to quickly dispatch enemies.

A good way to increase this skill is to try to reinforce or repair clothes any cloth pieces you find when looting that you don't plan to wear (you don't want to practice on your own clothes, as you might destroy them in the process).
Raising this skill allows you to use more powerful martial arts techniques.

First Aid
Handguns
Your skill at emergency medical treatment, such as that from first aid kits and bandages. High levels of this skill will help you heal more HP. Drugs in general have a more potent and lasting effect the higher this skill is.
Handguns have poor accuracy compared to rifles, but are usually quick to fire and reload faster than other guns. They are very effective at close quarters, though unsuited for long range engagement.

Speech
Rifles
Your skill at talking to people, convincing them of things, lying, and many others. Works best in conjunction with a high intelligence.
Rifles have terrific range and accuracy compared to other firearms, but may be slow to fire and reload, and can prove difficult to use in close quarters. Fully automatic rifles can fire rapidly, but are harder to handle properly.

Barter
Shotguns
Your skill at getting a good deal when trading with others. Very high levels might even see you getting freebies.
Shotguns are easy to shoot and can inflict massive damage, but their effectiveness and accuracy decline rapidly with range. Slugs can be loaded into shotguns to provide greater range, though they are somewhat inaccurate.

Swimming
This skill also includes the use of flamethrowers.
Your skill at swimming. This affects speed, your ability to swim while wearing clothes or carrying weights, and in-water combat.

Driving
Submachine guns
Your skill at driving. This affects how well you can control a vehicle, as well as the penalty to shooting while driving.
Comprised of an automatic rifle carbine designed to fire a pistol cartridge, submachine guns can reload and fire quickly, sometimes in bursts, but they are relatively inaccurate and may be prone to mechanical failures.

Skills are raised upon practice (combat, crafting, tools usage), but only when the character has at least [skill level]+1 points of focus. The focus pool is not capped, but it requires higher morale to increase to higher levels, every few turns your focus is increased or decreased depending on your current morale. You can increase the speed at which you gain focus by increasing your morale.

You can also increase skill levels by reading books or being taught by NPCs. Note that reading skill books costs focus, but being trained does not.

You can toggle on and off the skill-gain of individual skills by pressing the SPACE bar in the Skills section of the player menu @.

If skill rust is turned on, skills will degrade after a while without practice. Skill percent has a 25% (33% with Forgetful trait) chance to be decremented every X number of turns, based on the current skill level. The higher the skill is, the faster it will rust. Skills that are displayed as red or pink have dropped below 0% practice and will eventually degrade a level if not used (when they reach -100% practice). Using the skill (or bumping it up via reading) will quickly bring it to or above 0%. Skill rusting can be stopped with the Enhanced Memory Banks bionic.

The Melee and Firearms skill will improve both accuracy and damage of their respective weapons, but not as much as the weapon's main skill (handguns, cutting weapons etc.)
