Smoke is a field effect. It can obviously originate from fires, but it is also created by gas-powered vehicles (indicating that the engine made noise), from the occasional artifact, and from smoker zombies.

Density

  1. 8 - thin smoke
  2. 8 - smoke
  3. 8 - thick smoke

Effects

Smoke eliminates all nearby scents. It dissipates faster in exterior areas. It has 1/2 chance of spreading.

A character in a tile with thick smoke 8 (density 3) and not inside a vehicle will suffer from smoke inhalation with a strength of 4 for 15 turns, and will have its movement points reduced from 10 up to 20 points. Plant-like enemies suffer a more severe movement penalty. Smoke inhalation can also cause torso damage, which can kill you.

Creatures that don't breathe (such as zombies and robots, or any other with 'NO_BREATHE') aren't affected at all by smoke.

Protection

Each level of smoke rolls a certain number of d3s according to it's strength.

Thin smoke = 1d3, Smoke = 2d3, Thick smoke = 4d3

Clothing articles that cover the mouth roll their own d3s against this according to how much EP they provide- 1d3 per point of EP, and if the roll of the clothing is greater or equal that of the smoke's roll, it protects you from inhalation.

Here are some protection values for EP and various levels of smoke:

EP level Thin smoke Smoke Thick smoke
1EP (1d3) 65.67% 14.82% 0%
2EP (2d3) 92.58% 61.72% 3.84%
4EP (4d3) 100% 96.16% 58.44%
5EP (5d3) 100% 99.95% 84.45%
7EP (7d3) 100% 100% 99.3%
