Body temperature
The player's body can become cold or hot, and different body parts can have different temperatures.
Body Temperature model
Body temperature follows these guidelines :
Assumption 1: a naked person is comfortable at 19C/66.2F (31C/87.8F at rest). Assumption 2: a "lightly clothed" person is comfortable at 13C/55.4F (25C/77F at rest). Assumption 3: the player is always running, thus generating more heat. Assumption 4: frostbite cannot happen above 0C temperature.*
- In the current model, a naked person can get frostbite at 1C. This isn't right, but it's a compromise with using nice whole numbers.
Here is a list of warmth values and the corresponding temperatures at which the player is comfortable, and at which the player is very cold. The warmth values, as displayed on the @ screen are in an internal value, where 0 is considered comfortable to normal humans. Best to keep all your body parts as close to zero as possible.

What influences body temperature
Here are a list of things that affect body temperature:
Big ones:
- Ambient temperature
- Clothing warmth (reduced by wetness, except for items made of wool)
- Clothing provides less warmth (50%) when it's too hot.
- When sleeping, furniture and clothing on the tile
- Damage (1% heat lost per 2% damage on the body part)
Smaller ones that accumulate:
- Fatigue (when awake)
- Hunger
- Sunny weather, clear weather
- Temperature of connected body parts
- Low immunity diseases: the common cold cools you down, but flu heats up your head.
- Several mutations and bionics
- When unarmed, wearing clothing with pockets will heat up your hands (if needed).
- When head encumbrance is 0, wearing clothing with a hood will heat up your head (if needed).
- Broken limbs make those body parts colder.
Other notes: fire/lava increases warmth and fights frostbite, but get too close and your skin will blister.
Body temperature problems
Too high or too low body temperatures can cause all kind of problems for the unprepared characters. You can regulate this by either wearing clothes with high warmth or removing them.
Continuous exposure to extreme temperatures can have very undesirable consequences.
Cold and sleeping
@ : I'm cold and can't sleep at night. What can I do about this?
Gather some clothes that provide particularly high warmth (check the clothing page for that) and put them in the place you use to sleep in (or carry them with you if you're a nomad). Put the extra clothes on before going to sleep. You can also pile them up on the place you're going to sleep. Take them off when you wake up.
Check the warmth level of all your body parts in your character screen (@). If all of them are green then you'll likely be able to sleep without problems, unless a sudden drop in temperature occurs while sleeping.
Sleeping inside, and on a suitable piece of furniture can also help.
Being hungry, thirsty, wet, or having broken limbs can also make you feel the cold more, so try to avoid these effects before you go to sleep.
Effects on body parts
The effect of body temperatures on body parts is measured in intensities, with a higher number being a worse effect. So staying cold while suffering from cold intensity 1 will lead to cold intensity 2, which eventually will lead to frostbite, etc. Cold gives frostbite, heat gives blisters. Higher intensities inherit the effects of previous intensities.
So, a cold head of intensity 3 will also produce the effects of cold head intensity 2 and 1. And intensity 2 also that of 1.
