Addiction
Summary
Whenever you consume an addictive drug, there is a chance that you will become addicted to it if you aren't already. Some substances are more addictive than others and have a higher chance to cause addiction. The traits Addictive Personality and Addiction Resistant modify this chance. If you are already addicted, consuming the substance will sate any cravings, as well as potentially increasing the intensity of the addiction.
While you are addicted, you will suffer negative effects. Different addictions have different effects. The more intense your addiction is, the more severe the effects. Taking a drug when you're craving it resets your "sated" timer to 2 hours (1 hour if you have the Addictive Personality trait, 6 hours if you have the Addiction Resistant trait). You start suffering from withdrawal once the timer has run out. Taking a drug when you're not yet craving increases the timer by half as much.
Addictions take a while to remove; it depends on how intense the addiction is. Each time you take the drug, there is a chance your addiction intensity will increase by 1. Addictions have no effect until they reach intensity 3, meaning you can take the drug a couple times safely so long as you then lay off it for a while.
When you have been craving a drug for (6 hours - 10 mins * addiction intensity), your addiction level is reduced by 1, or removed completely if it is 2 or less. (If you have Addictive Personality, the formula is (10 hours - 10 mins * addiction intensity), which yields a time from maximum withdrawal onset to clearing the debuff of 6 days, 21 hours. If you have Addiction Resistant the formula is (3 hours - 10 mins * addiction intensity).) At the lowest level of addiction (intensity 3), it will take 5 hours 30 minutes after cravings start for the intensity to drop to 2, then another 5 hours and 40 minutes for the addiction to be resolved, for a total of 11 hours 10 minutes. At the highest level of addiction (intensity 20), it will take 3 hours 20 minutes after cravings to drop to intensity 19, 3h 30m to drop to 18, and so on. Going from intensity 20 to clear of addiction takes 78 hours 50 minutes, or a little over 3 days. This is the same regardless of the type of addiction.
Post-apocalyptic rehab procedure is to stock some food and water, usually MREs, chunks of meat, and water, along with a hotplate or water purifier if needed, and sit it out for a day or two. The most common addiction, painkiller, can be a real trouble. If you have the "Inconspicuous" perk, then most anywhere without a window will suffice, others may want to hide out in the woods, a basement, or the ground floor of a lab to remain safe.
Addiction Effects
In general, addiction effects are triggered more frequently if your addiction intensity is higher. You will receive a message every time the morale effect is triggered.
Nicotine Withdrawal
- Reduces morale by −15 per trigger, down to a minimum of −3 * intensity.
- Has a small chance to fatigue the player.
- Has a small chance to reduce stimulant level by one, up to a maximum of 50 points of depressant.
Caffeine Withdrawal
- Reduces morale by −5 per trigger, down to a minimum of −30.
- Has a high chance of reducing stimulant level by one, up to a maximum of 150 points of depressant.
- At intensity 8+ it has a very small chance to give you the shakes for 20 turns.
Alcohol Withdrawal
- Reduces intelligence and perception by 1 point.
- Reduces morale by −35 per trigger, down to a minimum of −10 * intensity.
- Small chance to give you the shakes.
- Small chance to give you hallucinations. There is no notification on beginning to hallucinate.
- Roughly once every 2 hours, has a chance to reduce your health by 1, down to a minimum of −10 * intensity. This does not trigger a notification.
Diazepam Withdrawal
- Identical to, but can stack with, Alcohol Withdrawal.
Opiate Withdrawal
- Reduces strength, perception and dexterity by 1.
- Reduces morale by −30 or −40 per trigger, down to a minimum of −10 * intensity.
- When it reduces morale by the larger amount of −40, it will also inflict your character with the shakes.
- If it does neither, it has a chance to cause your character to vomit.
- Will also cause gradual pain, rising up to a maximum value of 2 * intensity. This can be a handy way of telling how deep into addiction you are.
- While you are suffering addiction, you will gradually develop an increasing tolerance to painkillers - reducing their effectiveness at treating pain.
- Has a small chance to reduce health by one, down to a minimum of −30 * intensity.
Amphetamine Withdrawal
- Reduces intelligence and strength by 1.
- Reduces morale by −25 per trigger, down to a minimum of −20 * intensity.
- Has a moderate chance of reducing stimulant level by one, up to a maximum of 100 points of depressant.
- Has a small chance of reducing health by 1, down to a minimum of −1 * intensity.
- May also cause you to "space out", suddenly reducing moves by 300 and cancelling any ongoing activity.
- May cause you to suffer the shakes or hallucinations.
Cocaine Withdrawal
- Reduces intelligence and perception by 1.
- Reduces morale by −20 per trigger, down to a minimum of −15 * intensity.
- Has a chance to reduce stimulant level by 3, up to a maximum of 150 points of depressant.
Crack Cocaine Withdrawal
- Identical to, but can stack with Cocaine Withdrawal.
Mutation Withdrawal
- Reduces morale by −5 per trigger, down to a minimum of −50.
- If you have the Metallassomaiphile mutation, this addiction is significantly worse:
- Reduces morale by −20, down to a minimum of −200.
- Has a very small chance to reduce focus by an amount equal to intensity, if your focus pool is 40 or higher.
Sleeping Pill Dependence
- Causes a 4 point penalty to sleepiness.
- Also caused by consuming large quantities of regular ("drowsy") cough syrup.
- Lasts longer than other addictions.
