Winded is a status effect applied when you completely run out of breath by depleting your stamina. Since stamina represents your respiratory fitness, thus winded represents extreme physical condition resulting from overexertion in a relatively short period of time, and depletion of available oxygen reserves.

When is it applied?

  • Winded can be applied when stamina is below 20%, but chance depends on actual stamina left, so it's statistically probable when it drops near zero.
  • Winded can be applied as a side effect of stimulants, depressants and painkillers overdose.

Duration

  • Base winded duration is 10 seconds, but can be prolonged by reapplying.
  • Maximum duration of winded is 30 seconds, so it cannot be applied for longer that that, but can be reapplied, effectively prolonging that time.

Applied effects

Winded applies:

  • -1 perception
  • -1 dexterity
  • -3 strength
  • -30 speed
  • Pain up to maximum of 20

Other interactions

  • You cannot dodge or block when winded.
  • You cannot run when winded, and if you are running you will be switched to walk mode.
  • Your stamina regeneration drops to 10% when winded (doesn't apply to stamina regeneration modifiers gained from mutations).
  • When driving a muscle powered vehicle you will stop, and won't be able to continue.

Tactics

  • Winded effect has to be waited out.
  • Every action that is draining stamina when it's already depleted is bound to reapply winded effect. Don't force yourself unless your life depends on it.
  • You have to actively manage stamina to prevent winded effect.
  • It is often better to rest before getting winded, even for a short time, then trying to do so afterwards.
  • Take note that stamina regeneration is effectively halted, and you are mostly defenseless while being winded, so you need to know whats your limit in running and fighting, to prepare a strategy ahead of time.
